Pirates: Anit-Heroes or True Villains?

The 18th century was one of the biggest times of pirates and piracy. Some famous names can be tracked back to that time frame such as, Capt Morgan, Blackbeard, and Capt Kidd. These rogues of the seas struck at any one and everything, great deal toward the Spanish and other forgein countries.

Many stories of pirates can have the illision of romantism of a dashing figure sailing the seas in search of treasure. But other stories report of evil men that took what they wanted and spared no one. Killing wasnt needed but a choice they gladly took. For years the topic of whether these men were actually anti-heroes trying to strike back at the monochrial system or just plain bloody thirsty killers?

What do you think of pirates? Are the stories true of men who actually used their skills of the sea to oppose the empire rules? Or were they out for other means, wealthy and riches beyond their wildest dreams?

In general they seemed a rather perverse lot, some were almost comical like Stead Bonnet, the only pirate kmown to have purcased a pirate vessle to go a pirating in, (at his trial he claimed he did it to get away from his nagging wife), he ended up being kidnapped & his ship confiscated by none other than Blackbeard who kept him prisoner on his own ship for several months.

Others were mostly opportunists that preyed on the weak & seemed to have no inkling of what a concience was. It was a tough brutal world back then. On the other hand they had one of the earliest successful Unions with the Brethern of the Coast. I would imagine one could expect to find a wide spectrum of personality as some of them were "pressed" into sevice when their ships were attacked.

Re: Pirates: Anit-Heroes or True Villains?

Pirates are villians, plain and simple. There has always been piracy and it still goes on today. If a modern sailor is "lucky" you just get robbed, beat, women raped and then let go. Most pleasure boaters are not so lucky.

However not all pirates slaughtered everyone on board. In fact those that were engaged in "state sponsored terrorism" such as the Corsair Berbers of Tunisia demanded tribute of nations or their flagged vessels were subject to attack. Other "pirates," such as Sir Francis Drake, were really agents of their government who didn't get letters of marquee and reprisal so they could be disavowed by the state. Many times there was a thin line between the pirate and the privateer.

Here is a counter question. Were the guys who blew up the USS Cole modern pirates or not? It is my opinion that to be a pirate there has to be the goal of monetary gain. There wasn't in the attack so they are simply terrorists.

RE: Pirates: Anit-Heroes or True Villains?

Its hard to say really, the question is a little broad, if you were to ask it about one particular pirate then we could focus on them one at a time and decide which were the villains and which were the anti - heroes.

Personal thought to the original question, id have to say they were kinda anti heroes. I mean they fought against the Navy, which wasn't always on the right side, as with any millitary run by a government there is room for corruption.

Sure pirates have a reputation of being vicious, but how vicious were there really?

Remember corruption is everywhere, and really it is one of the things in life we CAN rely on, like it or not :/
