Ammunition/Shot Types
Pirates of the Burning Seas features many different sorts of ammunition and of course not all with the same strength or effect. We've summed up the differences for you.
Round Shots
Round Shots are used primarily to do damage to the hull.
Solid Shot: Multipurpose, but better than anything against the hull.
Heavy Round Shot: Heavy iron cannonball.
Stone Shot: A round rock. Shatters on impact. Cheap, but not as powerful as Heavy Roundshot.
Dismantling Shots
Dismantling Shots are used primarily against the sails, masts and rigging.
Bar: Two iron hemispheres joined by a solid bar.
Chain: Two iron balls connected by a chain.
Star: A 10 segment chain formed into a ring. This expands out to cover a huge surface area when fired, but it ends up being somewhat weaker than the above types.
Anti-Personnel Shot
Extremely effective against crew, less so against other parts of the ship.
Langridge: The poor-man's canister shot. "Langridge" was a fancy name for "shove in lots of nails, gravel, clamshells or whatever" It wasn't terribly effective, but it was easy to come by.
Canister: The standard anti-personnel shot. It was literally a can filled with little iron balls.
Grapeshot: A new ammunition development in the early 18th century, and still (theoretically) restricted to the navy in PotBS. The shot consisted of nine iron balls, arranged in three nestled stacks of three around a spindle, sitting on a cap and secured by a canvas cover. When a naval 36lb cannon fired grapeshot, it was actually firing nine 4lb round cannonballs. Think about that the next time you and your 4lb guns on your sloop think about tangling with a ship of the line.
There may be some more types of shot available in the game, you'll have to find that out for yourself, hopefully not when it's flying toward you. My sources on the specific details of the ammunation are primarily "The Seventy-Four Gun Ship" by Jean Boudriot, and "The Line of Battle" whose author I forgot right now.
